Pumps for Africa - Custom-made versatility

Pumps for Africa

Custom-made versatility Pump suppliers that aim to explore untapped
opportunities in African mining have to do their home work thoroughly: finding
out about each country’s unique needs and the cost effective means of reaching
the market. A number of mine expansion projects taking place beyond the
country’s borders have become a lucrative niche for South African pump
suppliers. This phenomenon is testing pump suppliers’ capacity to manage demand
from finicky mining companies that need them for various
applications.  Jan Feldtmann, Managing Director of PCF Engineering, a
supplier with a growing footprint in Africa, has been monitoring developments
keenly for years. He says the pumps that are most sought after are centrifugal
pumps designed for slurry, sand and gravel transportation, using water as a
medium of transportation.Range of products - Largely, the pump
products demand range from 2”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” throughout the
continent. But there seems to be a pattern particular to size in each country
at least from PCF Engineering’s experience, Feldtmann notes. “In Angola
the 4” was very much in demand due to maneuverability and compact size. In
the DRC the 8” was very popular. In the last 2 years we have had a huge demand
for the 12” pump unit.”  Demand drivers - According to Feldtmann,
versatility is a major demand driver.  “Our pumps are used in rivers
and the ocean for sucking up sand and gravel. The pumps are used in the diamond
and gold industry mainly, but are also used for other applications like civil
building projects (harbour building in Cape Town) harbour dredging, laying of
pipelines in Durban harbour, sand mining in Kwa-Zulu Natal and dredging
building materials in Nigeria,” he says. Besides, he has learnt that
people mining in Africa require good, low maintenance machines that can
withstand the harsh conditions in the African bush. “Due to the fact that
there are no spares available, nor Vast untapped market
Feldtmann sees Africa as a vast untapped market that presents
opportunities for suppliers of various products.  He believes
suppliers might have only got a fraction of the market. “There are many
different applications, in which these pumps can be used.”
There should be under no illusions that exploring Africa’s potential is
an easy task, though, warns Feldtmann. “The challenge is reach the people as
well as funding to purchase equipment. The other challenge is transport, air
freight is a big problem to African countries and certain areas are not close
to harbours.”The most important factor that suppliers do not have to overlook
is that the African mining companies need faster delivery times and custom
